17 May 2009 Learning & Development Strategy
“When we apply knowledge to tasks we already know, we call it productivity. When we apply knowledge to tasks that are new or different we call it innovation” (Peter Drucker)

We know how people learn and that learning is not the same as teaching, we also know that different people learn in different ways. For the first time in history it is becoming important whether or not people learn and that the focus for that learning is the adult.

The information and knowledge needs of the individual will force schools to change and industry to teach. What are the lessons?

Lesson 1 “Being in the know”

In the 21st century, corporate leadership will see that innovation and productivity stem from knowledge. Leaders will want to stimulate their people to :

- Be knowledgeable about their organisation
- Figure out what information they need
- Take pride in the common enterprise
- Learn how to learn

Lesson 2 “Stepping out”

The corporate leaders will need to adapt theirknowledge by :

- walking outside their organisation
- working inside their organisation
- building cross-functional teams
- communicating priorities
- benchmarking
- working with diversity & challenges

Lesson 3 “Quality is a way of managing”

The organisational culture binds people in the organisation together and gives meaning and purpose to their work lives. The organisations which have strongly positive cultures achieve constantly good performances.
Continuous learning must be built into the way we work, no one is productive by putting weaknesses to work and therefore feedback is the key.
The way we do things and the way we want to do things, must be shared and developed.

- share values
- define good habits
- learn how to feedback
- recognise and run with the unexpected, and LEARN.
