An essential beginning to teambuilding is the creation of a shared model of what should be. An ideal model in operational terms will provide a blueprint for the future to which all team members across the organisation can subscribe. When all the people that have to live with the model, and come to terms with it, actually do that – put the ideal in contrast with the real – you have a pro-active commitment to making the change. If you can’t talk and exchange views and be innovative, how do you change? Where to start? Again the answer lies in a strategic model, closely aligned with some key tactical team development activities both with overall external focus.
The top talks to itself, the middle talks about the top, but doesn’t really get into the dynamics of the top. However, once the model is created by the top it gets passed down into the organisation and people are given a chance to have a crack at it, find the potholes. This does two things. Firstly it brings a lot of intelligence to bear on the design and it automatically gets the involvement and commitment of the people. People are fully prepared to implement what they understand.
